Dangerous weather expected across Victoria today

POSTED:
21 December 2025

Victorians are urged to stay informed and prepare today as dangerous weather is forecast across the state, with both storm and fire risks expected.

There is a risk of storms across eastern and northern Victoria, while extreme fire danger is forecast for north-western parts of the state.

Warm, moist air is increasing the chance of storms today. People living across Victoria’s north and north east should be prepared. This includes communities such as Mildura, Swan Hill, Euroa, Shepparton, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Corryong and Albury-Wodonga.

In these areas, very heavy rain and damaging or destructive winds are possible. Tornadoes may also occur.

Storms are also possible in other parts of the state, including Melbourne. These storms may bring 15 to 25 millimetres of rain, with up to 30 millimetres possible in some areas. Even less severe storms can cause damage and put lives at risk. Preparing early can help reduce harm.

People are urged to take care on the roads, as wet conditions, fallen trees, debris and downed powerlines may make driving dangerous.

Fire conditions remain dangerous in parts of Victoria. The Fire Danger Rating is Extreme in the Mallee, meaning fires can start easily and spread very quickly. Fire danger is High in the Northern Country and Wimmera, and Moderate in all other districts.

A Total Fire Ban is in place today for the Mallee district from 12:01 am to 11:59 pm. On a Total Fire Ban day, no fires can be lit or left burning outdoors. Following recent fires, people are reminded to check their bushfire plans and know what to do if conditions change.

A grassfire caused by lightning is currently burning in Wyperfeld National Park. The fire has burnt more than 1,800 hectares and is not yet under control. Forest Fire Management and CFA crews are working to contain the fire, and people are urged to continue to monitor warnings and local conditions.

Communities should also be aware that a Moderate Thunderstorm Asthma risk has been forecast for East Gippsland today. People with asthma are encouraged to follow their asthma action plans and have medication easily available.

Quotes attributable to State Response Controller Alistair Drayton

“Today is forecast to be a problematic weather day. If you’re in the north west, you need a fire plan. And if you’re in the north east, you need a storm plan. You can find information about both on the VicEmergency website.”

“Stay informed today, especially if you’re driving. Remember to never drive through floodwater – it could be the last decision you make.”

"If you are in an isolated area in the Mallee district, consider traveling to a city or larger town for the day as it is a much safer place to be on extreme fire danger days."
